The history of Christianity is filled with figures whose lives and faith continue to inspire believers across the centuries. Among them a special place belongs to Surp Stepanos Nahavga – a man whose witness to Christ remained unshaken even in the face of death.
The deacon chosen by the first Church
Stepanos was one of the seven deacons ordained by the first apostolic Church. He became a fervent follower of Jesus Christ while the Saviour still walked the earth. Distinguished by wisdom, strong faith and ardent devotion, he swiftly became a striking figure among the early Christians.
The bold preacher before the court
Devoting himself to ministry and preaching, Stepanos did not hesitate to defend the truth of Christ even when brought before the religious court. Instead of defending himself, he turned the accusations upon his judges, boldly rebuking their unbelief and hardness of heart. This provoked the fury of the crowd, and he was led outside the city, where he was cruelly stoned.
Martyrdom and forgiveness at the last
In the final moments of his life Stepanos spoke words that remain for ever in the hearts of the faithful:
“Lord, do not hold this sin against them!”
This prayer for forgiveness and mercy deeply shook even the fanatical Samvel, who was present at the killing. Later it was he – known afterwards as the Apostle Paul – who became one of the greatest preachers of Christianity.
Stepanos the Protomartyr
Saint Stephen (Stepanos) is recognised as the first martyr of the Christian faith, and therefore bears the honorary title of Deacon Protomartyr. Many Armenian churches are dedicated to his name, including a well-known monastery in the territory of present-day Iran. Beautiful sharakans (hymns) were also composed in his honour and are sung during the services.
Surp Stepanos in Bulgaria
Here too the veneration of the Protomartyr is alive. The Armenian church in the town of Haskovo bears his very name – “Surp Stepanos”. It is a spiritual home for the local Armenian community and a place where the memory of the saint is preserved.
Festal commemoration
The memory of Saint Stepanos is observed in the last week of December. The feast belongs to the so-called Avak Doner – the Great Feasts of the Armenian church calendar, which carry particular significance and solemnity.
